Inspired by the patterns apparent in the work of Klimt, Marc, Delaunay and the primal mystery of Neolithic cave paintings, Joe set out to experiment with a fusion of impulses in response to a commission received to execute a portrait of a horse. This one of the first paintings Joe completed in which technique was emphasized over concept. Painting took place with an attention to textured surface that was also novel to Joe at the time.

The foundation of Joe's work. In painting, Joe discovered the possibilities for visual communication and the greatest historical inspiration. His canvasses are largely earlier works, though he will return from time to time to paint on panels or found surfaces.
